MUNICIPAL ASTRONOMICAL CENTER
The Astronomical Center hosts all kinds of educational and observational activities aimed at the educational community, tourists, and individuals who wish to enjoy this fascinating science. Educational events and opening days are constantly announced on the website and the various social media channels that you will find on this page.
The facilities are located on the upper floor of the municipal music school, in the urban center of La Vega. They have an extensive observation platform with 360º visibility and spectacular views of the summit of Gran Canaria. There are several permanent platforms with advanced telescopes for observation workshops. The astronomical observatory is also located; the dome houses a state-of-the-art astrograph telescope with a computerized mount, which is designed for online educational observations using scientific CCD cameras, remote connections, astrophotography, and amateur research.
ANNUAL EVENTS THAT ARE HELD:
StarParty Canarias, a pioneering event on the islands, offers educational activities, astrophotography exhibitions, meteorites, workshops, and more over a weekend. The event has been established since 2005 and is a benchmark for astronomical outreach in Spain, even with the participation of foreign astronomers.
International Day of the Sun. A global event in which CARS is the official representative for the Canary Islands. During a day, solar observation and educational sessions are held with advanced telescopes equipped with professional filters. Celebration date around the Summer Solstice (June 21).
International Night of the Moon. A global event featuring educational and observational activities related to our satellite. Celebrated annually between September and October.
Live internet broadcasts of important astronomical events are also provided so that any observer can enjoy the skies of the Vega de San Mateo.
